Wave 3 Molchanovs certification course

Wave 3 courses are done during our coaching programs. For pricing, check out our coaching packages that include accommodation and the option for certification.

Right on your way to becoming a master freediver, Wave 3 is an advanced course appropriate for those who have completed the Wave 1 and Wave 2 Molchanovs certification courses or any other similar freediving course. From mastering advanced equalisation approaches that combine the Frenzel maneuver with either the mouthfill or reverse packing to learning how to simulate depth with Functional Residual Capacity (FRC) dives, during this course you will work towards holding your breath for over three and a half minutes, while you work your way to depths of between 34 to 40 metres in open water.

You will also get to expand your mental toolbox through advanced relaxation techniques by learning how to use attention deconcentration, while you will train your flexibility so that you can take your freediving abilities even further while staying always safe underwater.

You are required to perform a static apnea breath-hold of three minutes and thirty seconds and a seventy-five metre dynamic.

A typical day

We go beyond the structures of the course to include stretching, breath-work, as well as daily debriefings and individual fine-tuning of your skills. Exploration of dive sites is always included in our five day courses.

Morning - Advancing your skills, preparing your body and mind

The morning session begins with a discussion on the topics that will be covered, as well as Deep Med’s freediving philosophy. Next, we work on advanced equalisation approaches like mouthful and reverse packing, while we carry out several dry exercises that will help you gain better awareness and confidence. Through both dynamic and static stretching, we move on to warm up your body. Once you’re nice and loose, we focus on lung and diaphragm stretching, followed by breath control exercises known as pranayama. You’ll also get the opportunity to take all these exercises with you at home to practice and prepare for the next session.

Afternoon - Putting your old and new skills to the test

In the afternoon, we’ll head over to the water for your practical session. Here we’ll focus on technique analysis and FRC (functional residual volume) dives, while we’ll get the chance to practice mouthful exercises. We’ll also fit in buddying and safety to refresh your memory from previous courses you may have taken. Depending on the day and location, we'll explore the dive site.

Why are our courses longer?

A question we are often asked. The answer is simple: most courses today are short & fast-paced, which means there is not enough time to learn the skills properly.

During our course, we don’t just want to check off boxes to certify you. Our goal is to ensure that you have enough time in the water to grasp the skills and get as much practice as possible. We want you to have the confidence to safely and effectively buddy and assist other freedivers.

It’s more than just a course. We also give you the time and opportunity to explore what Gozo has to offer during our sunset exploration sessions. This is not just about getting certified, but about gaining a true understanding and appreciation of freediving.

Be sure to explore our coaching packages that include accommodation and the option for certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I have successfully completed a freediving intermediate course but not a Molchanovs Wave 2 programme. Can I enroll in this course?

All freediving organisations and systems offer the same form of training, while they cover the same skills and techniques which means that there is a direct crossover. Having said that, before we decide whether you can proceed to the next step, we must carry out a crossover evaluation to make sure that you have the necessary skills.

  • Do I become a freediving instructor once I complete the Molchanovs Wave 3 master course?

Following the completion of Wave 3, you are permitted to act as an assistant in Molchanovs Wave and Lap courses, however, according to the organisation, conditions apply.

  • I want to become a Molchanov instructor. What do I need to do next once I complete Wave 3?

The Wave 3 is a semi-professional certificate that enables you to act as an assistant instructor. It is also the last step towards joining a Molchanovs Instructor Course if your goal is to make a career out of freediving.

  • What should I bring with me on the course?

All equipment is included in all the courses so all you need to bring with you is your swimwear and a towel. Should you wish, you may bring a light snack, although we do provide nuts, fruits and water.
