Freedive FAQ's

+ What is freediving?

Freediving is when a diver descends underwater on a single breath. It’s a great experience for marine-loving people, swimmers and divers alike; and gives newcomers a fantastic introduction to the sea. It frees you to enjoy the beauty and the silence of the sea in ways you haven’t experienced before.

A common misconception on freediving is all about how deep you can go or how long you can hold your breath. This is not the case. Have you ever been snorkelling and dived down for a short while to explore the underwater world? If so, then you have freedived. There is obviously a fine line that then separates the two.

Taking part in a course below will teach you the necessary skills and techniques to extend your time underwater, in the most relaxed & safest way possible.

+ How should I go about selecting a course?

If you are a complete beginner, you have two choices.

First comes our 'Discover Freediving' which is a great introduction & will ultimately make you decide whether you want to further your education and move on to the RAID FREEDIVER - a structured course which in the end, certifies you.

If you are comfortable with the water and you think you've got what it takes then skip 'Discover Freediving' & move straight onto 'RAID FREEDIVER.

+ Is freediving a safe underwater activity?

Just like scuba diving and any other water sport, it does have its dangers but this is why there are courses. Freediving becomes dangerous when people read information online and practice by themselves or with a friend. There is a lot of information out there but how credible is it and how do you know if you're doing it properly?

Enrolling in a course ensures you get the right education and all information is valid & credible. In the end you have your mind at rest and you know exactly what to do in any situation.

+ I have asthma, can I freedive?

Before taking part in any course with us, you must fill in a medical form which does ask if you have asthma. A check up with a doctor would suffice in order for you to continue with the course.

Freediving teaches yogic breathing techniques which have proved to help settle asthma and sometimes even get rid of it because of its soothing effects.

Deep Med's instructor Fabrice, suffers from asthma (mild) and he has felt the positive benefits that freediving has brought about. Asthma has not stopped him from diving and developing his skills.

+ I'm terrible at holding my breath and my lungs are tiny

Learning to hold your breath is just like riding a bicycle - the more you practice the easier it becomes. Lungs have no role in how long you can hold your breath as freediving is a 90% mental game.

+ Why choose us?

Firstly, we make sure to keep our groups small (maximum 3 persons). This ensures that each student will get the necessary attention whilst at the same time not waste any time.

We also a adopt a 'less is more' approach & focus on the practical side. A lot of information is overwhelming and can sometimes make the student overthink the process. Practical repetition is key - which is why we chose the RAID system.

We make sure to go down with you the whole way. It is pointless for an instructor to stay at the top of the buoy and watch you from there. If you have a certain problem it is a lot easier to figure out side by side.

+ What can I do about accommodation in Malta?

There is loads of choice. From hotels to hostels, all the way to Airbnb. If you need any information the send us an email.

+ Which dive locations will I be taken to on a course?

Because of the necessary relaxation one needs for freediving, we ensure to take our students to the best locations based on the prevailing weather conditions around Malta & Gozo.

Generally, the calmer the water the better the diving experience.

+ Does it matter which certification agency I choose?

Really and truly no. When it comes to freediving it is all about the instructor.

We choose RAID because of their easy-to-use online platform where manuals are downloaded whilst at the same time you engage in online quizzes and exams. An added bonus is that focus is more on practical training & repetition rather than 'studying' the theory.

+ I am certified with another agency, can I crossover to RAID?

Just like all other agencies accept each other, so does RAID.

Remember it's all about the instructor & not what agency you are certified with.

+ Is there a difference between snorkelling and freediving?

There is a very fine line that separates the two, however freediving is anytime you hold you breath underwater.

Whenever you go for a snorkel and go for a short dive you are technically freediving. Freediving teaches you breathing techniques to help you relax and extend your time underwater.

+ Are RAID certifications recognised all over the world?

+ What shall I bring with me on a freediving course?

Equipment is included in all our courses. Bring with you a towel, swimwear & light but healthy snack. Water is provided.
